How to Become a Sports Journalist

Many children dream of being professional athletes, but the truth is only a very small percentage will ever realize those dreams. A passion for sports will only take you so far. However, if you also have a talent for communicating and a love for researching and writing, sports journalism may be the perfect career option for you.

Being a sports journalist is not easy. Like any other competitive industry, it involves a rigorous commitment and a long period of paying dues. There are many steps you can take to get into the field of sports journalism, but before you even begin you will want to decide if you are ready to dedicate a large portion of your life to the field. Also, it cannot be understated that education is key. You will need to ask yourself, Am I willing to take the classes needed to earn my degree in journalism?

If you have the drive and get the proper education, the following tips can prove useful as you get into the field of sports journalism:

Start Small

Youre not going to get the best assignments or make the big bucks starting out. Be willing to take whatever work you can as you build a name for yourself. See if your local newspaper has an opening for someone to cover high school or college sports.

Develop a Thick Skin

Everyone is going to be a critic of what you write; many will be quick to voice their displeasure when they disagree with you. Dont take it personally.

Continue to Evolve

Take opportunities to become a better writer wherever you find them, even in non-sports related fields.
